Reading it
- A stud at 0 and one at every multiple of the spacing after it, plus whatever lands at the far end. Mark both plates together and they cannot disagree.
- Each opening adds two king studs, a jack under each end of the header and cripples above — and removes the field studs that fell inside it.
- 24" centres saves studs but needs thicker sheathing and drywall to span between them, and what it may carry is a code question rather than a preference.
- Add a stud or two to the order. A crowned or twisted stick gets culled and it is always the last one.
