Clamping pressure and clamp count

“Plenty of clamps” is not advice. The glue makers publish a pressure in pounds per square inch, and a pressure times a glue line is a number of clamps.

The larger of the two governs, because each catches a different failure: too little total force leaves the whole joint under-pressed, and too few clamps leaves a starved patch between them on a joint that looked fully clamped.

Harder wood wants more pressure, not less

Which is the opposite of most people's intuition. The pressure is not there to squeeze glue out — it is there to bring two surfaces into contact across their whole area against the stiffness of the wood resisting it, and a stiff board resists more. Franklin publish 100–150 psi for softwoods and 175–250 for dense hardwoods.

Why clamp force is a field

Because it genuinely varies and nobody publishes it consistently. A 3/4" pipe clamp, an F-style and a parallel-jaw clamp differ by a factor of two or more, and the figure depends partly on how hard the person turning the handle is turning it. Asking is better than inventing a number that looks authoritative.

The spacing cap is a shop rule of thumb for the same reason. The 45° pressure cone people reach for to derive it applies when you clamp through material; an edge joint is clamped in the plane of the glue line, so there is no thickness for a cone to spread through.
