Clamping pressure and clamp count
“Plenty of clamps” is not advice. The glue makers publish a pressure in pounds per square inch, and a pressure times a glue line is a number of clamps.

Clamp length matters as much as the count: a bar clamp has to reach across the panel plus its cauls. Force per clamp is the field above, and it is what decides the count.

The larger of the two governs, because each catches a different failure: too little total force leaves the whole joint under-pressed, and too few clamps leaves a starved patch between them on a joint that looked fully clamped.
Harder wood wants more pressure, not less
Which is the opposite of most people's intuition. The pressure is not there to squeeze glue out — it is there to bring two surfaces into contact across their whole area against the stiffness of the wood resisting it, and a stiff board resists more. Franklin publish 100–150 psi for softwoods and 175–250 for dense hardwoods.
Why clamp force is a field
Because it genuinely varies and nobody publishes it consistently. A 3/4" pipe clamp, an F-style and a parallel-jaw clamp differ by a factor of two or more, and the figure depends partly on how hard the person turning the handle is turning it. Asking is better than inventing a number that looks authoritative.
The spacing cap is a shop rule of thumb for the same reason. The 45° pressure cone people reach for to derive it applies when you clamp through material; an edge joint is clamped in the plane of the glue line, so there is no thickness for a cone to spread through.
About clamping a glue-up
- How much clamping pressure does a glue joint need?
- Franklin publish 100–150 psi for softwoods, 150–200 for medium hardwoods like cherry and walnut, and 175–250 psi for dense ones like hard maple and oak. Denser wood needs more, which is the opposite of most people's intuition — the pressure is not there to squeeze glue out, it is there to bring two surfaces into contact across their whole area against the stiffness of the wood resisting it, and a stiff board resists more.
- How many clamps is that?
- Multiply the glue line by the pressure and divide by what one clamp pulls. A 36" edge joint in 3/4" stock is 27 square inches; at 175 psi that is 4,725 lb, which is eight 600 lb clamps. That is usually more than people use and it is why a panel can look clamped and still have a line you can see light through.
- Why is clamp force something I have to type in?

- Can I over-clamp a joint?
- You can starve one, but it takes more than most people manage with hand clamps, and the usual failure is the other way. Where over-clamping does bite is on a joint with a sloppy fit, where high pressure closes the gap by crushing wood fibres that then spring back, and on softwoods, which is partly why their published range is lower. If glue is being squeezed out along the whole line and the joint still will not close, the problem is the jointing, not the clamps.
