Which biscuit a piece is wide enough for, what size dowel a thickness takes, and why neither adds much to an edge joint that is already stronger than the wood.
Alignment first, strength second
It is worth being straight about this before anything else. A well-made edge-to-edge glue joint in long grain is already stronger than the wood either side of it — the glue line is not where it will break. So a biscuit or a dowel there is adding alignment, not strength, and alignment across a wide panel is a real job worth doing well.
Where they genuinely carry the joint is anywhere end grain or short grain is involved: a mitred corner, a rail into a stile, a shelf into a carcase side. Glue has little to hold on end grain, and the loose tenon is what the joint is actually relying on.
Biscuits are chosen by room, not by thickness
The slot a biscuit joiner cuts is a fixed 4mm whichever size goes into it, so thickness does not pick the biscuit — it only decides whether you can use one at all. Half-inch stock is the practical floor, leaving about eleven sixty-fourths of wood either side of the slot; below that the cutter wanders and you can feel the slot through the face.
What picks the size is how much room there is along the joint, because the cutter enters on an arc and the slot it leaves is longer than the biscuit sitting in it. The makers publish a minimum width for each.

Dowels are chosen by thickness
A dowel is the opposite: its diameter comes off the stock the same way a mortise does, about a third of the thickness and half at the very most, so the hole is not the weak point. Length is really an observation about the shelf — pins are sold at roughly five times their own diameter, and half goes into each piece.
Which makes dowels the answer in stock too thin for a biscuit, and the answer where a joint has to resist racking rather than just line up.

How many, along the joint
Spacing is the same question a fence run asks — the fewest points that keep every gap under a maximum — so the calculator answers it with the same function. Six to eight inches along an edge joint is the usual range, and the first and last sit in from the ends so the slot does not break out.
On a narrow rail the count is not the question at all. There is room for one, and the only decision is which size fits.

What this page does not tell you
- Biscuits swell with the moisture in the glue, which is what makes the joint tight — and is why a slot cut months ahead and glued later behaves differently from one glued straight away.
- A biscuit slot is deliberately longer than the biscuit, so there is side-to-side play by design. That is a feature for aligning a panel and a problem if you expected the biscuit to locate a joint along its length.
- The minimum widths are the makers' published figures. The half-inch thickness floor is this site's own judgement about when a 4mm slot leaves too little either side, not a published limit.
