- How high should a closet rod be?
- 68" for a single rod hanging shirts, dresses and coats — high enough to clear the longest garments most people own, with a couple of inches to spare. A double-hang splits the space instead: an upper rod around 82" for folded-over shirts and jackets, a lower rod around 40" for pants hung by the cuff, which roughly doubles the hanging capacity of the same wall.
- How deep should a closet shelf be?
- 12" is standard for a shelf over a hanging rod — deep enough to catch a hanger's hook without the garment brushing the wall, not so deep that folded items get lost at the back. A shelf with no rod under it, meant for bins or stacked linens, is often built deeper, 16" or more, since nothing below it needs the clearance.
- Why is a closet shelf a beam-deflection problem?

A packed rod of clothes loads a shelf at somewhere around 10–15 lb per running foot, which is lighter than a shelf of hardback books but still enough to sag a long, thin, unsupported span over a few years.
- Do I need a centre bracket?
- Past roughly three feet of unsupported span for 3/4" material under a full rod of clothes, yes — the exact figure depends on the material's stiffness, which is why this calculator runs the actual sag check rather than quoting one number for every material. A centre bracket splits one long span into two shorter ones, and because sag grows with the fourth power of span, even one extra support does far more than its share.
- Is melamine or particleboard strong enough for a closet shelf?
- For a short run, yes; particleboard is roughly a quarter as stiff as birch plywood, so it needs a shorter unsupported span or a centre bracket sooner to stay flat under the same load. It is the usual choice for closets precisely because closet runs are often short enough that the difference does not matter — check the span this calculator gives you before assuming it will.
