Dowel and biscuit sizing

Both are loose tenons and both are sized by the stock — but by different things. A dowel comes off the thickness; a biscuit comes off how much room there is along the joint.

The slot is a fixed 4mm whichever biscuit goes in it, so thickness rules biscuits in or out altogether and it is the room along the joint that picks the size. Minimum widths are the makers' published figures: 2 1/8" for a #0, 2 3/8" for a #10 and 2 3/4" for a #20.

Where the dowel size comes from

About a third of the stock thickness — the same rule of thirds a mortise and tenon works to, and for the same reason: a pin that size leaves enough wood either side of the hole that the hole is not the weak point. Half is the ceiling. A third of 3/4" is 1/4".

Length is really an observation about the shelf rather than a rule: pins are sold 1/4" × 1 1/2", 5/16" × 1 1/2" and 3/8" × 2", each about five times its own diameter. Each hole is bored a little past half, so the dowel cannot bottom out in both at once and hold the joint open on trapped glue.

What these are actually for

On an edge joint, alignment — not strength. A well-made edge-to-edge glue joint in long grain is already stronger than the wood around it, so there is nothing for a biscuit or a dowel to add. Keeping a wide panel flat while you clamp it is a real job and worth doing well, but do not skip jointing the edges properly on the theory that biscuits will hold it.
