Compound miter chart for boxes and hoppers

Reading it

  • Slope is measured from horizontal: 0° is a flat ring or frame (pure miter, no bevel) and 90° is a straight-sided box (pure bevel, no miter). Most hoppers and planters fall between 30° and 60°.
  • A four-sided box sloped 45° — the classic hopper — is 35.3° miter and 30° bevel, and it is the case every compound miter table opens with.
  • This is the same geometry a turned segmented ring uses with a small number of sides. Cut a test corner from scrap before the good stock: the miter and bevel interact, so an error in one is easy to misread as the other being wrong.
