How high should wainscoting be?

A third of the wall is the classic proportion — 32" on an 8-foot wall. Chair rail height, the field left between rail and base, and the box layout that fills it.

At that rail height, 23 1/2" of field is left between the baseboard and the rail — which is what the panel boxes have to fit into.

How that is worked out

  1. The classical proportion puts the rail at a third of the wall height. It works because it is well away from the middle, and anything near half the wall height visually cuts the room in two.
  2. On a 96" wall that is 32", which is the 32" used here. In practice 32" to 36" covers most rooms, and 36" is common because it is also a comfortable chair-rail height.
  3. Take off the baseboard and the rail's own face and the field is 23 1/2". The boxes sit inside that, 16 1/2" tall here, with a larger reveal below them than above.

Worth knowing

  • A third is a starting point, not a rule. Full-height and three-quarter-height paneling are both traditional; what does not work is landing near half the wall, which reads as an accident.
  • The bottom reveal is traditionally larger than the top and side reveals. It is the same instinct that makes a picture mat deeper at the bottom — visually it centres what is measured slightly low.
  • Measure the rail height to the *top* of the rail, and set it off the floor rather than the ceiling. Floors are more level than ceilings, and the eye reads the rail against the baseboard.
  • Work out the box layout across the whole wall before cutting anything. Equal boxes that end at an awkward width in the corner are the thing you will notice for years.
