How that is worked out
- A stud at 0 and one at every 16" after it: 120" ÷ 16" = 7.5, and a stud at the far end, so 9 marks across the wall.
- "16 inches on centre" means the centres are 16" apart, which puts the first stud's centre at 15 1/4" from the end of the plate if the sheet edge is to land on the middle of a stud. Mark the plates together, both at once, and the two cannot disagree.
- Corners and openings are extra. A three-stud corner adds 3; every door and window adds king studs, jacks and cripples on top of the field count.

Worth knowing
- 24" centres uses noticeably fewer studs — 9 against 12 on this wall — but it is not a free choice. It needs thicker sheathing or drywall to span between studs without waving, and whether it is allowed at all depends on what the wall carries and what your code says.
- This counts a plain wall. Openings change it: each one adds two king studs, a jack under each end of the header, and cripples above (and below, for a window), while removing whatever field studs fell inside the opening.
- The site will count the studs a header needs but will not size the header itself. How many jacks a span wants depends on species, grade, snow load and what bears on the wall, and a wrong number there is a structural mistake rather than a cosmetic one — get it from the span tables or an engineer.
- Add a stud or two to the order. A crowned or twisted stick gets culled, and it is always the last one.
