How do I find the spring angle of a piece of crown molding?

Hold it in a square corner, measure how far it drops down the wall and reaches across the ceiling, and the spring angle is the arctangent of reach over drop.

Drop 2 1/2", reach 1 15/16" — that molding's spring angle is 37.8°, close enough to call it 38°.

Every compound miter setting the crown calculator gives depends on this one number, and a piece pulled off an old job with nobody left to ask is exactly when you need to measure it rather than guess.

How that is worked out

  1. Hold the molding upside down and backwards in a framing square, exactly the way it would sit nested in a saw's fence and table, or stand it in an actual square corner.
  2. Measure two things: how far the back edge drops down the vertical leg (the wall), and how far it reaches along the horizontal leg (the ceiling).
  3. The spring angle is the arctangent of reach over drop: atan(1 15/16" ÷ 2 1/2") = 37.8°. It only takes those two measurements — the profile's shape and width do not enter into it.

Worth knowing

  • Measure at the widest part of the profile, back edge to back edge, not along the decorative face — a fingertip on the flat back of the molding at both ends of the drop and reach is more reliable than trying to follow the curve of the profile.
  • 38° and 45° are common, but nothing stops a mill from making a profile at another angle entirely. Trust the measurement over the assumption, especially on an older or imported profile.
  • Once you have the spring angle, everything else — the miter and bevel for any corner, cut flat or nested — comes from the crown molding calculator the same way it would for a known 38° or 45° profile.
  • A molding that measures close to a preset but not exactly on it is probably that preset, measured with the ordinary slop of a tape and a framing square. A molding that is clearly between two presets is its own thing and should be treated as the number you measured, not rounded to whichever preset is nearest.
