How high should you hang a picture?

Hang a picture with its centre 57" from the floor — the gallery convention. Where that puts the nail depends on the frame and the wire, and here is the arithmetic for every common frame size.

Hang it with the centre of the picture 57" off the floor — for a 16 × 20 frame on a wire, that puts the nail at 56".

The frame then runs from 47" to 67" off the floor. The nail is not at the centre because the wire pulls up to it: here it sits 8" below the D-rings.

How that is worked out

  1. Top of the frame: the centre plus half the frame, 57" + 10" = 67".
  2. The D-rings are 3" down from the top, so they hang at 64".
  3. 20" of wire across rings 12" apart pulls taut to a point 8" below them — half the wire and half the spread are two sides of a right triangle — so the nail goes at 56".

Worth knowing

  • 57" is a gallery convention for the average eye height of a standing adult, not a rule. Over a sofa or a sideboard, hang it relative to the furniture instead, with the bottom of the frame a hand's width or so above it.
  • Measure the wire pulled taut with your finger, not as it lies on the back of the frame: the drop from the D-rings to that point is what decides the nail height, and a wire that stretches will hang the picture lower.
  • For a heavy frame, two hooks under the two D-rings with no wire hang level and stay level; the template prints both marks.
