How many drop ceiling tiles for a 12x12 room?

A 12x12 room takes 36 tiles of 2×2 or 18 of 2×4, every one of them whole. Tile counts, border widths and grid parts for every common room — and what to do when it does not divide evenly.

A 12' × 12' room takes 36 ceiling tiles of 2×2, or 18 of 2×4.

12' divides into whole tiles both ways, so nothing is cut. The grid is 3 main tees, 16 4' cross tees, 12 2' cross tees, 4 lengths of wall angle and 6 hanger wires.

How that is worked out

  1. Area alone would say 144 sq ft ÷ 4 = 36 tiles of 2×2, and here it is right, because 144" is exactly 6 tiles each way.
  2. In most rooms it is not, and the count is the grid's cells, borders included: a border is cut from a whole tile, so each one costs a tile however narrow it is.
  3. The grid is centred so the cut tiles against opposite walls are equal and at least half a tile wide. Run it off one wall and the far side gets a sliver.

Worth knowing

  • Main tees run across the joists, 4' apart, so a hanger wire can reach a joist wherever one is needed. They come 12' long, and a longer room splices two end to end.
  • Hanger wires go every 48" or so along each main, but the grid maker's instructions govern — and so does any fixture, which wants its own wires rather than the grid's.
  • Buy a box more tiles than the count: a tile cracked in the cutting, and the one that will be needed to replace a stained one in five years, will not match a later batch.
