How much countertop overhang needs support?

Most tops carry 6" unsupported; 3cm stone carries 10". Past that it needs brackets or a corbel. What each material holds, and how many brackets a run takes.

6" is the usual unsupported limit — 10" for 3cm stone.

A 12" bar overhang on a 72" run needs 4 brackets, landing about 24" apart.

How that is worked out

  1. A standard countertop overhangs the cabinet by about 1 1/2" at the front, which needs nothing. The question only arises when a top runs out past its cabinet to make a bar or a seating overhang.
  2. How far it can reach unsupported is a property of the material: laminate and wood on a substrate manage about 6", and 3cm stone about 10" because it is both thicker and stiffer.
  3. Past that, brackets go in at roughly 24" centres — 4 across a 72" run here.

Worth knowing

  • These are the figures the trade works to, and the fabricator supplying your top has the last word — they know their slab, their seams and what they will warrant.
  • It is not only about the top breaking. An unsupported overhang that flexes will crack a seam or pop a joint long before the material itself fails, and somebody leaning on the edge of a bar is a real load.
  • Knee space is what the bracket has to leave alone. A bracket under a seating overhang has to be set back or it is exactly where somebody's legs go — corbels at the ends and a steel plate through the middle is the usual answer.
  • 2cm stone is often laminated at the edge to look like 3cm. That doubles the visible thickness and does very little for the span, because the stiffness comes from the full section, not the edge.
